INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SPYBOT S&D'S IMMUNIZE FEATURE

How Immunize Works Mainly With Internet Explorer

Spybot's "Immunize" feature adds entries to the Windows Registry
which has the following effects on IE (Internet Explorer browser):

* Blocks cookies from certain websites.

* Places certain websites in the IE restricted zone and
locks down the IE if you visit one of those nasty websites.

* Blocks the download/execution of selected ActiveX scripts.

Note: If you use Spybot S&D and other products like
IE-SPYAD, SpywareBlaster, etc. together, there is
an overlap of some of the protection offered.
If you undo or disable the protection in one product,
it may remove some of the protection installed by
the other. You should re-immunize or re-enable the
protection in the other products as appropriate.

About Immunize With Browsers Other Than IE

Spybot's Immunize feature works mainly with the Internet Explorer
browser. Unfortunately it provides no additional protection
for other browsers with at least one exception. For example, AOL's
browser is integrated with Internet Explorer so it benefits
from Spybot's Immunize feature.

AOL's web browser uses the Internet Explorer engine and
does use the privacy and security settings from Internet
Explorer. Therefore Spybot's immunization should be effective
using AOL's web browser.

The jury is still out on the MSN browser. Even the folks at Spybot
are not sure whether the MSN browser is integrated with IE's
security settings.  If you happen to know, please Email me so I
can add that information here.

About Immunize And Blocking Of Cookies

Immunization also adds separate Windows registry entries to block cookies
from certain websites.

To see this effect of Immunization on IE, go to...
Tools -> Internet Options -> Privacy tab and click on the SITES button.
Then you can see the list of websites that have cookies blocked.

About Immunize & the Restricted Zone

Immunize works by adding a long list of specs that identify the
bad websites to IE in the RESTRICTED ZONE. Once IE is
immunized, and you happen to land on one of the bad websites,
IE recognizes the bad/dangerous website and locks down the IE
browser by disabling various features like Active-X and Scripting
that the bad guys can use to install spyware and otherwise do harm.
The website may not operate normally but you will be protected.

The protection offered by adding sites to the restricted zone
depends on the security settings for the Restricted Zone within
Internet Explorer. If you have changed any of those settings to be
more permissive then less protection will result.

To see this effect of Immunization on IE, go to...
Tools -> Internet Options -> Security tab -> Restricted Sites
and click on the SITES button. Then you can see the list of specs
that identifies the bad/dangerous websites.

To see the actual permissions & restrictions of the IE Restricted Zone,
go to... Tools -> Internet Options -> Security tab -> Restricted Sites
and click on the Custom Level button.

About Immunize And Blocking Of Certain ActiveX Processes

Immunization also adds separate registry entries to block certain
ActiveX processes.

To see this effect of Immunization on IE, use Regedit or some other
windows registry utility to look at the following registry key:

* [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility]
